After Tehran's airstrikes in Iraq, Iran's foreign minister says, "We do not seek escalation or war, but will defend ourselves against any aggression." Meantime, President Trump tweets: "All is well!" and "So far, so good" regarding casualties. https://t.co/xl7mIF1h6K

This analysis similar to what Jazeera's Asad Beg in Tehran is saying: The Iranians are offering Trump an off-ramp from wider war by mounting a limited retaliation for Soleimani and warning US that it escalates only if US mounts new strikes https://t.co/3vE1G26GgR

Keep in mind, these bases are HUGE with vast amounts of empty space. Iran’s targeting would need to be precise, and the warheads large enough, to do significant damage. They could very easily be falling in the desert. It’s a massive escalation regardless, but damage will matter.
— Afshon Ostovar (@AOstovar) January 8, 2020
Iran was going to retaliate sooner or later, one way or the other. There was no way they would let this go.
But Iran is now trying to make it clear that this is a retaliation for one action, not an escalation into a full-on war.
There is no appetite for war in #Iran.

TRUMPWORLD
We sort through all…10…times Trump said Obama would attack Iran to win re-election:
Trump: "Some time prior to the election they'll be some kind of war started."
Hannity: "That would be the single most chilling abuse of power in American history."https://t.co/WHRGdcBy4U

We may be on the verge of yet another wildly ill considered war. And it was entirely avoidable. The crisis did not begin with Iran. It began with Trump. And it wasnt really abt Iran, it was in Trump's head: the obsession abt undoing Obama's Iran deal. But there's more. Read on. https://t.co/IC2idQ9NRi

Trump reluctantly walked back his threats to commit a war crime by launching airstrikes against Iranian cultural sites, telling reporters on Tuesday morning that he was “OK with” obeying international law on the matter while also expressing his petulance. https://t.co/LJyGubQi0L

What's odd about Pompeo's public role in all of this is that he is not taking the leading *diplomatic* role as previous Secretaries of State have done. He is taking the leading role justifying military escalation, as Secretaries of Defense have done. Pompeo wants a war with Iran.
