Hello and thanks for reading. I hope you find something worthwhile in the Note each day.
I’m currently looking for potential freelance editorial projects or a part-time opportunity with a news organization, regardless of size. I’ve recently relocated to my hometown of Belfast, Northern Ireland, after a decade living in New York. I’m still, of course, available virtually for work worldwide.
Briefly – I have a career’s worth of experience in daily news coverage, print and digital, mostly at the Financial Times, where I was part of the start-up team for FT.com and later US News Editor.
I’ve run FT.com’s overnight desks in London and New York and I’m rarely happier than when a big story’s breaking. I’ve written about every Presidential election since 1988, and did my PhD work on how user-generated content is changing the way the press covers campaigns in both the US and Britain.
Other stops since moving permanently to the US were at Forbes, McKinsey and at MuckRack.com, where I helped launch their daily email newsletter. I’m currently freelancing and working on a couple of personal projects. For much of 2016, I was working on an academic project looking at coverage of the Trump campaign. (For details of that and clips, scroll down to the bottom of this page.)
While news is my home, I also have pretty broad experience in corporate content work, as well as editorial consulting for companies in the US and UK.
My LinkedIn profile is here.
I’m currently working with an exciting online project based in Belfast called Northern Slant, which aims to provide a platform to showcase the diversity of political and cultural debate in a new Northern Ireland. Get in touch if you’d like to know more.
If you think I might be a fit for something you need, drop me a note – steve[dot]mcgookin[at]gmail[dot]com – and I’ll send you a complete resume. I’m happy to meet or chat anytime, and clips and references are always available.
Thanks for your time;
Steve
