And as we head into this period of unprecedented uncertainty, it might be worth reminding ourselves of the day the now President-elect jumped into the Republican primary race.

During the 2016 US Presidential election I wrote a regular column for FirstWord on the candidates ad and media strategies. You can read an archive of those here.

For the last 10 weeks of the campaign, I co-hosted an election podcast with The Guardian’s Lawrence Donegan at ByTheMinute.com – you can download them from iTunes here. Needless to say, we got everything as wrong as everyone else and used the final one to apologize.

A couple of weeks before the election, I took part in a panel with Prof John Naughton, Prof David Runciman and Prof Gary Gerstle at Wolfson College, Cambridge on “Post-Truth politics and the Presidential election”. It was a great evening, with as you’d expect, some insightful interventions from the sold-out audience. The best question, I think, was “Deep down, do you think Trump really wants to be President..?”

My answer was that I thought he wanted to win, but wasn’t sure whether he wanted the prize.

I guess we’ll see over the coming weeks and months.
