UK parliament backs ‘snoopers’ charter’

The Investigatory Powers Bill is set to become law within weeks and gives unprecedented powers to Britain’s security services.

Wired writes:

Communications service providers, which include everything from internet companies and messenger services to postal services, will have to store meta data about the communications made through their services.

The who, what, when, and where will have to be stored. This will mean your internet service provider stores that you visited WIRED.co.uk to read this article, on this day, at this time and where from (i.e. a mobile device). This will be done for every website visited for a year.

AMERICA IN TRANSITION

So as the events of the last few days sink in, there’s much talk on the left of political strategy, psephological re-invention and resistance. Predictably so, given the disconnect between what was expected and what occurred. But more importantly, there seems to be a broader societal cleavage manifesting itself that will not be altered simply by a change of the personnel in power.

Meanwhile, some of the incoming President’s campaign “promises” may turn out to be merely “devices”.

Not their President?

There were protests overnight in cities across America in the wake of Donald Trump’s Presidential victory. The President-elect meanwhile will today meet with the current incumbent at the White House as the transition process officially begins.

And the reaction around the world was almost as dramatic.

But for every protester, there are many who feel empowered by Trump’s victory.

Don’t get too excited about a rust-belt renewal and all those new jobs just yet…

And amid all the anger, sadness and indeed celebration, there is serious work to be done on both sides of the divide.

Meanwhile, for the new President-in-waiting there is still some unfinished business…

US wakes up to new political world

From Politico this morning:

WE WERE ALL WRONG. That seems obvious, right? But we were more than wrong. We were laughably oblivious. The entire Washington political-media complex completely missed the mark. Not by inches or feet, but by miles. For a year and a half, we scoffed at those who said the polls were wrong. The polling industry is broken. We had our eyes trained on prognosticators and pundits — but they were all wrong, too. There will be plenty of time to dissect it all. The joke is on us.

Meanwhile, in the real world…

Trump poised for stunning victory

After the most divisive campaign in history, the two candidates are a few miles apart in Manhattan this evening, waiting to see who will become the 45th President of the United States.

With key contests closer than expected, Hillary Clinton’s chances of becoming the first female occupant of the White House rested in a dwindling handful of states. After narrowly winning Florida,  projections indicated that what seemed to be an unlikely path for Donald Trump was becoming much clearer.
