Apple facing huge EU tax bill

UPDATE:

EARLIER: The Irish government is in line for a windfall, potentially in the billions of Euros – and will appeal against it. EU competition authorities will on Tuesday rule against Apple for “improperly-designed” tax arrangements covering alleged improper state aid for their activities in Ireland.  While Apple will likely appeal, the Irish government is set to do the same, saying its low corporate tax regime has helped it attract multinational companies, who now make up one in ten of all workers in the country.

Border row flares ahead of French elections

With elections in France looming next Spring, immigration is again emerging as a potential political flashpoint, particularly in the context of a post-Brexit Britain. Former – and wannabe future – French President Nicolas Sarkozy, as well as local French politicians, are arguing that the “Jungle” refugee camp in Calais should be moved across the Channel to Britain.

Turkish police attacked near Syrian border

Developing: Several people are reported dead and many injured in a large explosion, thought to be the result of a car bomb attack, at a police building in the town of Cizre in south-eastern Turkey, near the border with Syria.

Reuters reports that the “state-run Anadolu Agency blamed the attack on the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) which has been involved in almost daily clashes in the region since last July, when a ceasefire between it and the government collapsed.”

‘Regretful’ Trump back on-message? – Manafort quits campaign

UPDATE: Paul Manafort has resigned as a senior adviser to the Trump campaign amid unfolding stories concerning his lobbying ties to pro-Russian groups in Ukraine.

EARLIER: As Donald Trump himself said, “Believe it or not.”

In his first major campaign speech since a shakeup of his advisory team, the GOP candidate expressed “regret” at not choosing the right words, “particularly where it may have caused personal pain.” He was not specific about exactly which words he was regretful.

Politico called the speech “one of the most comprehensive, on-message rationales for his candidacy to date.”

Meanwhile, here’s Trump’s first general election TV ad, which started running today.
