‘Prayers are no longer enough…’

As yet another community comes to terms with yet another mass shooting – the 944th such incident in the US in the past three years – a clearly frustrated and upset President Obama called, once again, for reform of America’s gun laws.

“Our thoughts and prayers are not enough… It does nothing to prevent this carnage from being inflicted someplace else in America, next week or a couple of months from now.”

It was the fifteenth time he has addressed a mass shooting during his Presidency.

Russian airstrikes in Syria are set to dominate the summit on Friday in Paris, as Vladimir Putin meets with Francois Hollande and Angela Merkel for discussions previously set to address the situation in Ukraine.

In London, the Conservative candidate for next year’s London mayoral election will be, as expected, Zac Goldsmith. And not, er, S*l Camp*ell.

Looks like Joaquin might not be coming to party after all…

Putin’s power play

Russian and American military officials are set to meet as the West digests President Vladimir Putin’s escalation of the conflict in Syria through Russian air strikes, a second wave of which was launched on Thursday morning.

The BBC‘s Jon Sopel writes on how Russia “blindsided” the US. “There should be no surprises about what the Russians have done,” he writes.

The target of Russian ordnance has been in places where IS has no presence.

In other words, other rebel groups – any rebel groups – opposed to President Assad are being targeted. And that raises another huge question. What if the Russians start hitting US backed and armed rebel groups? That is not going to end well.

And who knows how many US special forces there might be on the ground helping those rebel groups? What if they find themselves coming under fire – do they call in US close air support to see off their Russian attackers?
